09 is the year the New York Jets get their title back
The New York Jets are one of the most adored football teams in the AFC Eastern Division, along with the entire NFL. The Jets are currently awaiting the completion of their new stadium - the Meadowlands Stadium, which should be ready to be played in for the 2010 season. In the meantime, the Jets share a stadium with the New York Giants in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Regardless, fans cannot wait for the ‘09 season to start, and tickets are disappearing quickly.
Prior to the AFL/NFL merger, the New York Jets were a member of the AFL, in 1960; at which time they were known as the New York Titans. During this time, in their career, the Jets did not have too many fans. They played in Polo Grounds stadium, where many seats were left empty at home games. The formerly known Titans played well; they just were not attracting a fan base.
In 1963, the Titans were bought, moved, and had a name change; this is when they became the New York Jets. This move was one of the greatest things that ever happened to the team, because this is when they became dangerous on the field.
It was not until the mid to late 60s that the team began to make a name for themselves as they began to make and break records. Actually, they were the very first AFL team ever to beat to an NFL team (NFL teams were always known to be favored). It was this win, over an NFL team, which won the Jets the championship title in the third Super Bowl.
In the 60s the team acquired a well known quarterback by the name of “Broadway Joe” Namath; it was this name that attracted fans by the thousands. Namath was a star player for the Jets, and was the first quarterback ever to throw 4000 yards in one season! That same year, 1967, the team ended the season with a 8-5-1 record. Two short years later, in 1969, the Jets won another AFL Championship title as the trampled the Oakland Raiders.
It was at this juncture, in football history, that the AFL began to become a threat to the NFL. Namath, prior to their Super Bowl win, actually had the nerve to guarantee the win to their loving fans. It was this game, a 16-7 win over the Colts, that got the Jets their first Super Bowl win, and the beginning of what would prove to be a very successful football team.
After this amazing win, Namath left the team due to knee injuries, leaving them to fend for themselves. Through the years the experienced many ups and downs, but nothing quite as exciting as the win in ‘69. Finally, in 2008, the team traded their quarterback for none other than Brett Favre.
Brett Favre has done some amazing things for the team, including leading them to victory once again. Players began to improve upon their weaknesses, and fans got excited again when they saw the wins flowing in. With a new season approaching, fans are excited about a possible title win; so much so, that season tickets are already gone, leaving few one-off seats for stragglers.
